Under the gracious patronage of Gérard Araud,
Ambassador of France to the United States,
the Russian Chamber Art Society presents
its season-closing concert at the Embassy of France,
featuring soprano Jennifer Casey-Cabot,
bass Denis Sedov, violinist Emil Chudnovsky and
pianists Genadi Zagor and Vera Danchenko-Stern,
RCAS founder and artistic director.
Evoking the Parisian musical scene of the 19th and
early 20th centuries, the artists will perform a rare and delightful
program of works by Charles Gounod, Modest Mussorgsky,
Sergei Rachmaninov, Igor Stravinsky and Sergei Prokofiev.
Casey-Cabot, a graduate of Oberlin and Yale, will sing
pieces from Pauline Viardot's French repertoire as well as
several of the celebrated soprano's settings of Russian texts.
She will also sing "Five Poems of Anna Akhmatova"
and Natasha's aria from "War and Peace," both by Prokofiev,
and an aria from Stravinsky's "The Nightingale," first performed
in Paris by Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in 1914.
Sedov, a Jerusalem Academy graduate and former
member of the Metropolitan Opera's Lindemann Young Artist
Development Program, will sing selections from
legendary Russian bass Feodor Chaliapin's signature repertoire, including Méphistophélès's aria from Gounod's "Faust," Mussorgsky's "Song of the Flea" and Aleko's cavatina
from Rachmaninov's "Aleko."
In addition, Chudnovsky will play excerpts from Prokofiev's
"Romeo and Juliet" and "The Love for Three Oranges"
and Zagor will improvise on themes of Stravinsky.
All this, plus a wine and dessert reception with the artists and your fellow lovers of art song and Russian culture, in the spirit of Mme. Viardot's salon (see below).
